“The Lord will work out His plans for my life—for your faithful love O Lord, endures forever. Don’t abandon me, for you made me.” Psalm 38:8 (NLT)
As we approach the season of our older teens getting ready to launch, fear of the empty nest can creep in. Our identities, as well as most of our time, money and energy, have gone into parenting these children, and we can become lost trying to figure out what our purpose is again. Be encouraged! God still has a plan for your life. Those plans are for good. “I know the plans I have for you”, says the Lord. “They are plans for good and not disaster. To give you a future and a hope.”(Jeremiah 29:11) As our children begin their launch cycle, it can feel as if they are abandoning us. It may also feel as if the Lord is abandoning us. Rest assured that His love is faithful and lasts forever—even after the season of hands-on parenting is complete. Allow God to birth something new in your life: new desires, hobbies and interests. Allow Him to also birth a new relationship with your child who is moving into adulthood. A relationship based on mutual respect as people instead of on caregiving and receiving. Joy comes when they know you are a safe haven as they stretch their wings. It can rival what you experienced when they took their first steps or said their first words. It can also be as terrifying. This pre-empty nest will require you to trust God in a new way. He will not abandon you. Cling tight to God as you slowly learn to release your growing child. -Tammy
