“Ask, and it will be given to you; seek, and you will find; knock and it will be opened to you. For everyone who asks, receives and he who seeks finds, and to him who knocks it will be opened.” (Matthew 7:7-8 NKJV)

I was on the phone with my Mom recently. “I just don’t know what to do with (insert child’s name),” I said. “I have tried everything to deal with the attitude and it’s not working. What should I do?”

She gave me some wise, motherly advice, and then she said, “Just take it to God. He will give you wisdom and show you what to do.”

Truth bomb.

As moms, we can get so caught up in answering all the questions and taking care of everybody else’s problems that we actually forget how badly we need help ourselves. We forget that there’s Someone waiting to parent us in our parenting.

Our kids understand the simplicity of these verses.

They ask for a drink, and we give it to them.

They knock on the bathroom door, and we give up our moment of solitude to open it.

This is just how God parents us. He isn’t waiting for us to have an emergency before He hears us. He isn’t withholding answers we need because we aren’t asking right. He wants to give good things to us, as Jesus says in this verse: “So if you sinful people know how to give good gifts to your children, how much more will your heavenly Father give good gifts to those who ask Him?” (Matthew 7:11 NLT)

If our kids asked for a snack, would we give them rocks? Or if they were hungry for lunch, would we serve up a wriggling snake? I think not!

In the same way, our Heavenly Father will respond when we ask Him for help. God wants us to succeed as parents and He will equip us for that success. All we need to do is ask!
“If any of you need wisdom, ask our generous God, and He will give it to you. He will not rebuke you for asking.” (James 1:5 NLT)
