“Guard your heart above all else, for it determines the course of your life.” (Proverbs 4:23, NLT)
Everything we think, say, and do springs from the well of our hearts. Even our desires come from our hearts. The other day my dad reminded me of an old saying he used to tell us when we were kids. (Obviously, he STILL reminds us!) Watch your thoughts, they become words; watch your words, they become actions; watch your actions, they become habits; watch your habits, they become character; watch your character, for it becomes your destiny. We say what we think, and eventually the things in our hearts lead us to our destiny. Proverbs 4:23 says that our heart determines the course of our life. No wonder Proverbs instructs us to guard it—above all else—at all costs. Many things compete for our affection. The music we listen to, the TV shows we watch, the books we read, and the friends we choose. The more time we devote to these, the deeper they root in our hearts. And the harder it is to uproot them, if necessary. This is particularly important when our teens choose whom to date. It is easy for them to think dating is “fun and not serious.” They don’t understand how easy it is to give their hearts away. We have heard many “romance stories” of those who gave their hearts to someone who was not worthy of it. We must fill our hearts with the truth of God’s Word—the Book of Proverbs being at the top of the list. It is full of wisdom for helping us discern what (and who) is worthy of our hearts. Mama, what (or who) possesses your heart? How do your children see you protecting your heart? -Dianne
