“Remind the people to be subject to rulers and authorities, to be obedient, to be ready to do whatever is good, to slander no one, to be peaceable and considerate, and always to be gentle toward everyone.” (Titus 3:1-2, NIV)

The standard we set with our words and actions becomes the groundwork our children build their life from.

Today’s verse has many ideas of what we hold ourselves accountable to. They will shape our thoughts, our attitudes, the culture of our home, and the quality of our relationships.

Most Christian mothers want their children to grow up into well-grounded, spiritually mature adults. However, we can’t expect from our children what we are not willing to work on ourselves.

Do my children hear me speak peaceably and considerately?

Are my words gentle toward others?

Do they hear me refrain from slander and gossip?

Do my words and actions reflect a heart of obedience and goodness?

Does my word choice build up or tear down other people?

Many mothers, myself included, expect their children to be well behaved and respectful in public. However, if those traits are not modeled to them in everyday life, how can we expect them to act “civilized” in public.

The standards we hold ourselves to become the culture of our life, home, and relationships.

The benchmark we set for ourselves determines the ceiling of our influence.

Hold yourself to standards of humility and wisdom. “Do not think of yourself more highly than you ought, but rather think of yourself with sober judgment, in accordance with the faith God has distributed to each of you.” (Romans 12:3, NIV)

Praise God that wisdom can be asked for, and faith can grow stronger. May we never cease growing up in the Lord, holding ourselves to ever increasing standards in His grace.
