"All the days ordained for me were written in your book before one of them came to be." (Psalm 139:16b NIV)
I am a planner. Or—I might as well be honest—I am a worry-aheader. I like to contemplate how future days, events and seasons might play out and then, as my mom would put it, "stew about" the possibilities. I realize the folly of this, of course. God's foreknowledge of all the days of my life before one of them came to be is not an invitation to me to try to figure all those days out ahead of time. What it is, rather, is an instruction to me to trust that God Himself already has everything figured out and that He'll reveal it to me in His own good time. To reign in my "worry-aheader" tendencies, I often tell myself, "Just do the one next right thing." Three words are key here: one, next, and right. I need to do one thing, not ten. I need to do the next thing, not the thing that's a dozen paces ahead of where I'm standing. And I need to do the right thing, according to the wisdom and guidance God generously provides. So here are my “notes to self” for today: just do the one next right thing. And instead of worrying about what's up ahead, worship the One who's already there. -Elizabeth
