Day 2: The Power of Your Words

​“For, ‘whoever would love life and see good days must keep their tongue from evil and their lips from deceitful speech.’” (1 Peter 3:10, NIV)

If you are like most mothers, you would like to enjoy life and see good days.

Especially with your children.

You’ve heard it said, “When Mama ain’t happy, ain’t nobody happy.”

Far too often we depend on others and circumstances to determine our level of happiness. Since each day as a parent brings a struggle with someone in our home, if this quote were true, all of us would be justified to live as miserable grouches.

Rather, today’s verse suggests that if we would like to love life and have good days, we need to watch what comes out of our mouths.

You see, our language, both verbally and internally, shapes our moods and attitudes. Which in turn influences how we act—and thus affects everyone around us.

Our words shape the culture of our home.

Speak life, enjoy life. Speak grouch, enjoy grouch.

When Mama ain’t happy, aint nobody happy… but what if Mama made the choice to change her verbal and internal language?

Would her children follow suit?

I think, yes. They follow suit when I’m a grouch, so I expect the opposite to be true as well.

So I’m choosing to speak life, love, grace, and truth to myself and to my children.

I will love life and make today a good day for each heart in my home.
