“The heart of the righteous weighs its answers, but the mouth of the wicked gushes evil.” (Proverbs 15:28, NIV)
In this fast-paced, need-to-have-it-all-now world, we often feel the pressure to keep up. We rush from one activity to another, just stopping long enough to put out fires as we go. Life demands that we respond quickly, or risk being left behind. So it’s no wonder that our communication also moves at break neck speeds. Texts, instant messages, and quickly spoken voice notes are all the norm. Yet, the wisdom of Proverbs encourages us to slow. things. down. When our children ask a question, do we rush off a response without thinking, just hoping to get back to the next thing on our list? Or do we carefully weigh our answers? Do we stop long enough to notice the teachable moments that their questions present? As moms, one of our goals is to build long-lasting, loving relationships with our children. How we communicate with them will make a big difference. We can either rush off some ill-thought words, or pause long enough to consider what we will say and how we will say it. Our words can build bridges or break them down. Why not go against the grain today? Choose the slow road of carefully considered words. I’m sure they will bless those who listen. -Marva
