“Suddenly, a fierce storm struck the lake, with waves breaking into the boat. But Jesus was sleeping. The disciples went and woke him up, shouting, ‘Lord, save us! We’re going to drown!’ Jesus responded, ‘Why are you afraid? You have so little faith!’ Then he got up and rebuked the wind and waves, and suddenly there was a great calm.” (Matthew 8:24-26, NLT)
Suddenly. What a powerful word! We can all relate to things happening in our lives “suddenly.” Suddenly, our child gets sick. Suddenly, a loved one dies. Suddenly, we lose our job. Suddenly… Just as suddenly as something hard, terrible or tragic happens, God can interject HIS suddenly that calms the storms of fear, grief and anxiety. He brings HOPE and lets us know that we are not alone. There are times when His “suddenly” changes our circumstance and the storms cease. Other times circumstances remain the same, but He lets His presence and care be known in the midst of them. The disciples steered their way through the terrifying storm for as long as they could. Then they called on Jesus. This past summer we experienced a very scary “suddenly.” Within two days I received calls from each of my daughters’ counselors letting me know they were both suicidal. Panic filled my heart and mind. I’d done everything I could for them in an attempt to avoid getting to this place. All I could do was cry out to Jesus! I needed wisdom, direction, and for my babies to want to live. The storms raged all summer as they went to a day treatment hospital for anxiety and depression. I can honestly say that I have never prayed for my children as often or as diligently before. They fought a hard battle, and one day, suddenly, one of them laughed. It brought such joy to my heart. Each time we recognize God’s sudden presence or intervention in our storms, our faith grows. We remember when He showed up before and can trust that He will do it again. What “suddenly” are you facing today? Invite God to let you see His sudden work in the midst of it. -Tammy
