“For the mouth speaks what the heart is full of. A good man brings good things out of the good stored up in him, and an evil man brings evil things out of the evil stored up in him.” (Matthew 12:34-35, NIV)
Have you ever said something and wondered where it came from? Sometimes, the words that spill out of my mouth sound as if they’re not my own. In those moments I’ve really had to stop and check my heart. I wish I could simply disassociate myself from my words, especially if they are hurtful ones. I could blame someone else for my poor choice of words. Or I could make excuses. “It’s because I was tired.” The truth is, my mouth speaks what my heart hears. So, let me ask you, what is your heart listening to? Have you allowed bitterness or envy to speak loudly in your life? What about lust or deceit? Perhaps unforgiveness has shouted the loudest. Don’t let your jaw drop when you hear the words that come out of your mouth. Perform a heart check to see what’s in there. And be on your guard. Decide what you will let into your heart. It’s only a matter of time before it spills out in the words you say, and pretty soon your children will echo them. I want to be a woman whose words are good, pleasing, and worth repeating. I’m pretty sure that’s what you want too. -Marva
