“Large crowds followed Jesus as he came down the mountainside. Suddenly, a man with leprosy approached him and knelt before him. ‘Lord,’ the man said, ‘if you are willing, you can heal me and make me clean.’ Jesus reached out and touched him. ‘I am willing,’ he said. ‘Be healed!’ And instantly the leprosy disappeared.” (Matthew 8:1-3, NLT)
In Bible times, lepers were banned from living with other people. They either lived alone or in colonies with other lepers. In fact, if anyone approached them, they were required to cry out, “Unclean! Unclean!” This allowed those nearby to keep their distance so they wouldn’t become ceremonially unclean. But one leper didn’t follow this instruction. When he saw Jesus, he came in faith, knelt before Him and said, “If You are willing, You can heal me and make me clean.” Jesus acknowledged his faith. He touched the leper, healed him and made him clean. The Bible uses leprosy as a picture of sin. As leprosy separated the ones afflicted from everyone they loved, so sin separates us from the life and love of God. God’s plan for us is to live in His love—in fellowship with Him and other believers. When we give our lives to Christ, He takes up residence within us. He restores our relationship with God, the One Who created us—and gives us a life that is fully satisfying. Jesus is more than willing to meet you. As He did with the leper, He will reach out and touch you—making you clean, whiter than snow (Psalm 51:7). No longer do you have to feel alone or isolated. Instead, you can enjoy a relationship with the Lover of your soul. All you have to do is ask. Will you, sweet Mama? Fellowship with Him is sweeter than anything else you can know.
