Day 12: Parenting Wisdom from Proverbs

“He who works his land will have abundant food, but he who chases fantasies lacks judgement.” (Proverbs 12: 11 NIV)

The land of our homes is our business to work.

More importantly, the land of our home is reflected in the soil of our children’s hearts.

The atmosphere we build within our walls must be a breeding ground for love, peace, hope, and acceptance.
If it isn’t, we are at risk of preparing a soil that is resistant to instruction, wisdom, hope, and potential.

We are working for a future harvest not only in our lives, but also in the lives our children. According to today’s Scripture, “chasing fantasies” somehow hinders the abundance of our harvest.

The idea of a mother who “chases fantasies” might seem a bit far out there. I mean, we are immersed in the demands and body fluids of our loved ones 24/7. Who can fantasize through that?

However, anything that creates a mental get-away in the presence of our children qualifies as chasing fantasies.

Things like social media, Youtube, even a novel or other book.

When the virtual interferes with the real, we have indulged in a fantasy.

When we pick up our phones, our eyes leave our children and our presence leaves our homes.

We can travel to the other side of the world while sitting in our living rooms with our children at our feet.

Dear mother, the other side of the world will always be there. Your children will not.

The world beyond your home will always be calling, but if you answer it now, your children may not answer your calls when they become older.

Our children need our eyes to look at them and our hands to reach for them.

Make your presence the one gift you refuse to withhold from your children.

Show up, mama. Work your land before your children leave home and the harvest bears regret.
