How To Create A War Room That Works In A Busy Schedule

3/1/2016

I have wanted to create a war room ever since we watched the movie. But I really didn't know where to start. What verses did they use? How can a Mom spend any amount of time locked away in a closet? And where am I supposed to put my clothes anyway?
Have you been wanting to start a war room, but don't have room for it? Or maybe you're not quite sure where to start? Here's a great, creative guide to help you get started!
It has taken me a long time to just sit down and tackle all those questions and come up with a solution that works for me. Now that I've done it, I wish I would've started a long time ago.

I decided what I need is a portable war room. One that I can take anywhere and be inspired by anytime. Here is what I used:
  • 2 Bible translations
  • 1 pack of colorful pens
  • 1 journal
  • My phone for research

I took my dear old Bible that I have had since 3rd grade and started paging through it. Every verse that ever spoke to me is underlined so it was easy to find inspiration quickly! I found prayers in the epistles, verses of praise, verses of victory, verses on battle and verses of worship and copied a bunch of them down in my journal
I used a different colored pen for each passage and I ended up kind of having a theme for each page. Some pages are warfare pages and some pages are simply passages of worship from Psalms, Isaiah and other Old Testament books.

I've recently been inspired by looking into the names of God found in the Old Testament and I included a whole page of the names in Hebrew with their English meaning beside them. The very essence of God is found in His name! You can find a lot of them in this article.
Have you been wanting to start a war room, but don't have room for it? Or maybe you're not quite sure where to start? Here's a great, creative guide to help you get started!
Have you been wanting to start a war room, but don't have room for it? Or maybe you're not quite sure where to start? Here's a great, creative guide to help you get started!
Some of the names that I used:

Elohay Kedim: God Of The Beginning
Elohay Selichot: God Of Forgiveness
Elohay Mikarov: God Who Is Near
Elohay Tehilati: God Of My Praise
Elohay Yishi: God Of My Salvation
El HaNe'eman: The Faithful God
El Emet: The God Of Truth
Yaweh M'Kadesh: The Lord Who Makes Holy
Yaweh Tzidkaynu: The Lord Our Righteousness
Yaweh Yireh: The Lord Who Sees/Provides

Some of verses that I used:

Page of Praise
-Isaiah 64:8
-Isaiah 61:10&11
-Psalm 135:13
-1 Chronicles 16:34
-Psalm 86:11-13
-Psalm 72:17-19

Page of Praise & Victory
-Colossians 1:9-11 & 12-14 {I wrote these down separately - one as a prayer and one as worship}
-Isaiah 54:17
-Psalm 30:1
-Psalm 20:6&7

Page of Praise & Seeking God's Heart
-Ephesians 1:16-19
-Ephesians 1:21&22
-Jeremiah 33:2&3
Isaiah 55:1-3

Page of Praise & Waiting
-Psalm 71:14-16
-Psalm 8:1,3,4&9
-1 Corinthians 1:9
-Psalm 62:5-8
-Psalm 63:3-5

Prayer for Guidance
-Psalm 25

I used a mix of translations - mostly KJV {slightly reworded in my own words} and The Open Bible. I especially loved the Open Bible translation for the Old Testament passages. I also reworded some of them. For example, Ephesians 1:21&22 I wrote down like this: Jesus, You are far above any ruler or authority or power or leader or anything else in this world or the world to come. And God has put all things under Your authority for our benefit!

With the passages that were originally Paul's prayers for the churches he was writing to, I wrote down in a way that I can pray them for myself or my husband, children and friends.

"Lord, may I {he/she} be filled with the knowledge of Your will with all the wisdom of spiritual understanding. May I {he/she} always walk worth of You, Lord..." {Colossians 1}

I encourage you to search the Bible, pray for God's leading and direction, and write down the verses in a way that you can pray them to God!

Then you will have a portable war room that will work anywhere and anytime! You can use it at your kitchen table, in your bedroom, by the couch, your workspace or on the floor as you watch your kids! Or you can simply leave it open on your kitchen counter so you can pray while you wash your dishes, cook for your family, etc. You can travel with it, write down specific prayer requests to help you remember them and any inspiration you got from your Bible study.

Some things that I am working on to make my prayer time more effective:
  • My prayer/Bible study space does not have to be perfect. If I wait for it to be perfectly neat and clean it's not going to happen. Sometimes I just have to settle down at a table with empty cereal bowls or sit on the couch beside sleeping dolls and unfinished projects. It's life.
  • Taking time to really, really study into short passages of scripture and glean out every bit of truth that I can, which really helps put my heart into a spirit of worship. My favorite way to do this is verse mapping. You can read a great article about it here.
  • I do not need to wait for a perfectly quiet time to kneel down at the couch and pray. I really think God hears and loves our prayers, even if they take all day to get prayed. God has placed us in our role of being Mommies and He knows that it's a full time job. While we do need to do our best to create some quiet time for our spiritual life there are days that we can't and that doesn't mean we don't need to pray.

I love it! The portability is essential. Way to go on figuring out how to make this work for you and your season of life. The lists of verses to pray are a great starting point.

Enjoyed your post today. The closet thing doesn't work for me either, but I have a chair that I love. Spending meaningful time in prayer, reflection, and study is the more important than location. Great tips and resources in your post today. I'm sharing this on my FB.

Oh I love this. I often get caught up with trying to make the environment "perfect" - it's totally not realistic. Thanks for sharing that pointer.

I appreciate these suggestions and inspiration. Pinning to my Deliberate FAITH board.

I haven't even had a chance to see the movie! I like the idea of having a portable "war room" journal. Is your journal just a list of prayers you can pray? I think a printable to hang on my pantry door might work better for me.

Amanda, I wrote the prayer verses in the back of my journal, and then I keep prayer requests in the front, and am also working my way through it with Bible Study, Scripture mapping, etc. A printable in the pantry is a great idea! I love keeping Bible verses in my kitchen, and places that I am at often. Writing them with a dry erase marker on a frame or mirror is one of my favorite things. :)

I have to say that I love this idea and had been thinking about a way to build my war room, and since I DO NOT have the room to make one (as we live in an apartment) and no real place to put it... even in the closet I had started to think about making a book for my travelers notebook (because it is both my planner and journal) and I carry it every where i go. :) these were some really great points. thank you. :)

What a practical & inspiring post! I love the idea of creating a portable war room. After all, we need to be praying throughout our day, and some of us don't have the luxury of being home all day.
Thanks for sharing these ideas!

I too don't have a closet. Sooooo. I got one of those tri-fold display boards. I covered it with felt. Now I am putting Scriptures on it and photos of all I will be praying for. So I can move it to the living room after my husband goes to bed. Or in my craft room or bedroom. Quite portable. I imagine I'll run out of room over time. I call it my prayer wall. Wailing Wall.

I have a weird little piece of space in my bedroom that is sort of attached to one of the corners; this, alcove I guess you could call it, is my prayer closet.

I have a timer that I use to be sure that I'm in there for the amount of time I want without having to be checking the clock… and that's all I need, for the most part.

When I'm in there, I'm PRAYING. Not reading the Bible, not taking notes, PRAYING. I think that many people can't handle just sitting there and praying, and so they have to be flipping through the Bible, reading often at random, copying verses down because it's not good enough to have them in the Bible, taking notes, reading their notes… they probably aren't even praying during 90% of the time they're in there.

Jesus didn't have any props around him when he prayed. No Bible, no journals, no fancy pens, no scented candles, no worship music CDs. He didn't tell US to use those things, either.

If I receive a word or anything else important during my time in my prayer closet, I type it into my journal afterwards. I don't let anything interrupt my time of prayer, including note-taking.

Give it a try. Leave all your props behind, and just PRAY, like Jesus did. If it is simply life or death for you to have a certain verse available during prayer, memorize it. If something important happens while you're praying that you want to record, do so after you're done.

The enemy can be subtle. He doesn't want you to pray. He'll keep you busy and distracted to try to prevent you from praying. If that doesn't work, he'll bog you down with books, journals, pretty pens, prayer lists, and anything else he can think of to keep you from praying long enough and with enough focus to actually accomplish anything. Food for thought…

Many years ago a friend's church studied _A Place of Quiet Rest_. Somewhere during this they decided to make prayer baskets as a portable way to contain and take their prayer room wherever they might need to.

I have had more than one over the years since, but I currently have a smallish, white, wooden crate whose inside is draped with a pretty scarf. I also found a fake bird of paradise flower that I tied onto one corner with a green ribbon.

Inside my prayer basket is a Bible, hymnal, squishy pens, note cards should the LORD lay someone on my heart, and a good-smelling candle or incense. This is not because I think it calls down the LORD or anything, I just enjoy making it a special moment, and I like to also add tea or coffee in a pretty cup.

Thank you for sharing, because lately I've not used it. I've been using just my prayer journal and pen/colored pencils, Bible, and the book _A Guide to Prayer for All God's People_. It's working for me! I guess it's good to realize that seasons come and go, that we should find our niche in each one, and to do that we must not be legalistic in what it looks like? ~Thank you for inspiring this thought. Please know it was personal reflection and not directed at anyone!~
