As women we keep ourselves constantly busy. We go from one project to the next, run to this meeting and that, clean the house, do the laundry, and, maybe, cook all our meals. And often, when there's nothing obvious to do, we create something. We talk about a day off, about taking time for a little R&R, but we hardly ever get around to doing it. Because, sometimes, we're scared to not look busy to everybody around us. We're afraid we will be marked down as "lazy" in the minds of our friend, family or coworkers. We have set this impossible standard for ourselves to keep everything in our life perfect. We forget that real life, true life, is so much more than what our house looks like, how many projects we have going or any other standard we like to measure ourselves with. Because, what if, in all our busyness, we are missing the voice of Jesus? What if we are missing His calling on our lives? I recently started reading through Mark and God caught my attention in the very first chapter, with a short passage that I have become so used to hearing that I no long heard what it was saying. As Jesus walked beside the Sea of Galilee, he saw Simon and his brother Andrew casting a net into the lake, for they were fishermen.“Come, follow me,” Jesus said, “and I will send you out to fish for people.” At once they left their nets and followed Him. When He had gone a little farther, He saw James son of Zebedee and his brother John in a boat, preparing their nets. Without delay He called them, and they left their father Zebedee in the boat with the hired men and followed Him. "At once they left their nets {work} and followed Him." What if Jesus is calling us away from our work, away to spend time with Him, and we don't even hear Him, because we are so "busy"? Or we do hear, but we don't follow up with instant obedience? If anybody had anything to loose by instant, impulsive obedience, it was Peter. He was not just walking away from what other people might think of him, he was leaving his entire livelihood behind him. Boats docked, nets lying idle. He didn't know when or if he would pick them up again. Life as he knew it was over, the decision made in a split second! If we are busy, exhausted and overwhelmed, could it be because we are not instantly obeying the voice of Jesus? Obedience is a form of worship in the life of a Christ follower. If we can refresh our soul and spirit by instantly leaving our work when Jesus calls and just spend some time worshiping in His presence, then why do we wait? It is time for us to leave our busyness behind, time to make the decision to let our lives be changed forever by our own instant obedience to the call of Jesus. And really, when He calls us aside to spend some time with Him, He is not asking much at all! He gives us so much more in return. When we choose to worship Him with our obedience, Jesus fills our cups, full and overflowing with His own life giving water! So what are we waiting on? It's time to leave the nets of busyness that ensnare us so easily and be ready to instantly answer HIS call to seek Him out in the moment. It's time to be impulsive and answer His call without a second thought! If you liked this post you might also like these:

Such wise (and convicting) words, Stefani! You know me, I can get so caught up in the busyness. God knows I could learn a thing or two from Peter!

Hi, Stefani, I believe this may be my first time visiting your blog. :) Excellent post! I know I'm often guilty of failing to obey instantly, but especially when in the middle of task. The scripture you used really speaks to that "not now" mindset.

I so love the heart of this post Stefani!! I have really been thinking a lot how it's so normal for our culture to be busy and look down on those who are not. We ask each other how we are and we reply busy. Yes, we need to leave our busyness behind and be obedient to what God calls us to do!

Oh, Stefani ... I. Am. Guilty! I definitely need to separate for a while and enjoy Jesus. I have been too busy, indeed. You and Marva have me looking for an opportunity. But wait ... didn't you (Jesus) just challenge me to do it! ((hugs))

Great post. I was intrigued the moment I read "we may feel scared to not look busy to everyone around us." I use to battle with that and still do sometimes. We desire to be such good wives that we want to make sure we look like one to everyone around us. I liked how you used Paul.

I am on a journey to know Jesus better, and be the wife, mommy and friend that God created me to be, all within the walls of my own little home. <3
